Morning Song was written in 2018 and began as a fragment scored for piano. It was discovered in a box of historical papers on the back of some teaching notes in faded pencil. Seeming to be written in the days of being a young mother, I sat at the piano to see where I might take it. At the time, experimenting with writing for guitar, the fragment became a catalyst for this piece. First for solo guitar, but after some workshopping, rearranged for duo. Early on a summer’s weekend, cup of tea in hand, wandering around the garden, the inspiration for the title was born. Thank you to the guitarists who have played it as it emerged: Paul, Brendan, and most of all, Matthew Marshall – without whose input it would still be a fragment for piano. – Louise E Matthews
