Three Sad Waltzes was commissioned by Suzanne Court in 1991 for inclusion in the collection Guitar Aotearoa published by Pro Arte Publications. It was first performed by Matthew Marshall in the Ilott Concert Chamber, Wellington, New Zealand on 26 November 1994 and recorded by him on the albums Still Life with Guitar and Fragments (Rattle RAT-D097).
